Maurus Moreelshuis Mechelen

The Maurus Moreelshuis is a multi-functional space which offers visual artists, musicians and speakers the opportunity to organize exhibitions, concerts and lectures independently. The venue got its name from the street in which it is located. It refers to the Mechelen painter (and contemporary of P.P. Rubens) who lived and worked in this neighbourhood and whose best known painting “The Adoration of the Wise Men” can be viewed in the nearby St Catherine’s church (Sint-Katelijnekerk).

Situated in the historic setting of the Large Beguinage (Groot Begijnhof), the Maurus Moreelshuis occupies a prominent place beside the Beguinage church (Begijnhofkerk), which itself harbours a treasure trove of art works.

Maurus Moreels was a Mechelen painter and contemporary of P. P. Rubens. He lived and worked in the part of the town of the Mechelen Beguinages. His best known work “The Adoration of the Wise Men” can be found in the nearby St Catherine’s church (Sint-Katelijnekerk).

End of the project "Maurus Moreelshuis Mechelen"

This project cames to a close on 31 December 2016.

However, it will still be possible to consult our website "www.4xm.be" for another few years. This means that artists who exhibited their work in the Maurus Moreelshuis at some stage in the past can still refer in their media reports to the data and photographs we placed on our website for them.
